Case Study: Casper — Enterprise Blockchain from Concept to Mainnet

How Hanzo helped Casper Labs architect and launch an enterprise-grade blockchain — from the Rust pivot to mainnet launch and DEVxDAO founding.

Casper Labs engaged Hanzo for strategic technical consulting on their enterprise blockchain platform. The project spanned from architectural decisions through mainnet launch — including the pivotal decision to move from Ethereum's proof-of-work to a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism built in Rust.

The Challenge

Enterprise blockchain adoption was stalled by two problems: performance limitations of existing networks and the complexity of smart contract development for enterprise use cases. Casper needed a blockchain that enterprises would actually use, not just pilot.

What We Did

Technical architecture: Consulting on the core protocol design, including the Highway consensus protocol and the contract execution engine. We recommended the pivot to Rust — a decision that improved performance, safety, and developer experience.

Developer ecosystem: Helped design the developer onboarding experience and tooling. Enterprise developers needed to build on Casper without becoming blockchain experts.

Strategic consulting: Advised on the DEVxDAO creation — a decentralized autonomous organization for funding open-source development on the Casper network.

Results

  • Mainnet launched successfully in March 2021
  • DEVxDAO founded with sustainable funding model
  • Rust language pivot delivered 10x performance improvement
  • Enterprise adoption by multiple Fortune 500 companies
  • $0 in security incidents since mainnet launch

"Hanzo's technical depth in both blockchain architecture and systems programming was invaluable. The Rust recommendation alone saved us years of development time and gave us the performance profile enterprises demand." — Mrinal Manohar, CEO at Casper Labs
